Description:

Hello VOCers!

Have you taken G1 or equivalent, practiced those skills, and now feel ready to take on more difficult terrain and conditions? Then this is the course for you!

Generally this more advanced glacier school involves building on the material from G1 and/or applying those skills on the way to some mountaineering objective. Topics covered may include:

  • Placing snow/ice protection - screws, pickets, bollards.
  • Running belay and belaying crevasses
  • Theory of navigating glaciers to minimize risk and maximize efficiency - when to rope up, when to belay, when to take the rope off, route finding skills.
  • Practical application of these skills.
  • “Real” crevasse rescue - if the terrain allows, we will have folks attempt to arrest an actual fall, and subsequently perform a rescue.

Prerequisites include all skills from G1, including:

  • Roping up for glacier travel
  • Building rescue systems
  • Self-arresting
  • Moving on glaciers
  • Belaying
  • Ascending with prusiks
  • Simple anchor systems

This will likely be a small group, so priority will be given to those who can 1) attend the pretrip meeting, 2) who are willing to instruct at G1 this year, and 3) have the necessary skills and have practiced them since taking G1
