Description:

Update as of Sept 2: Due to lack of interest, there will be no pretrip meeting. I will still be attempting the traverse via an accelerated itinerary.

Spend your Labour Day weekend on an epic peakbagging adventure!

Objective: Traverse the full Cheam range from Foley Peak to Cheam Peak.

Plan: Start at the base of Foley Cr FSR and hike up to Williamson Lake. From there the route will entail ~30 km of steep, off-trail alpine terrain of varying difficulty. With any luck, we'll be able to summit most of the major peaks in the range, while staying on pace for a three-day trip (If we find ourselves behind schedule there is an option to bail down the Baby Munday trail). Finally, we'll follow the trail over Lady and Cheam, and down to the Mt Cheam TH. The least fun part of the trip will probably be the 12 km hike/hitch down the Cheam and Chipmunk FSRs which will complete the loop. I've sketched the route here: https://www.alltrails.com/explore/map/map-aug-23-06-47-pm-82599a4

Difficulty: I would consider this to be a somewhat difficult trip both physically and technically. Participants should be comfortable scrambling class 4 ridges and gullies, navigating exposed alpine terrain, and hiking on uneven, rocky hillisides. Depending on our speed, we're likely to have some long days. That being said, I think the distance is very achievable for a fit group.

Gear: I don't know many people who enjoy scambling with huge packs, so the general goal will be to travel light, while still bringing all of the essential overnight gear (we can hash out shelter/food at the pretrip). Helmets are required. We can discuss at the pretrip whether we want to bring rappelling gear.

Transportation: I do not have a car, so if no drivers sign up I am willing to do this as a transit/self supported trip. This option would add a 3 hr busride and a 35km bikeride in each direction, which would mean leaving Friday afternoon/evening and returning as late as Monday morning. If any 4WD drivers sign up, there is an option to cut out the last 12 km of hiking, since I could run down the FSR, then bring the car from our starting point up to the Mt Cheam TH.

Weather: In the case of a poor weather forecast, we will likely scale back our plans to something less ambitious and/or lower in elevation.
