Description:

Sky Pilot is a 2031m peak that is classified as a beginner mountaineering objective. This would be perfect to get to walk on a glacier again (or maybe for the first time), and get some good scrambling in before the end of the season. This trip would be great for someone with some, but limited glacier and climbing/scrambling experience. Jacob and I did this route earlier in the season and it was incredibly fun, so we think it would be great to get some more people out there and get stoked.

It involves crossing a small pocket glacier (Stadium Glacier) and 4th class scrambling to the summit. The scramble is secure (no loose rock) and one of the most fun scrambles I've ever done. The glacier is small and relatively simple to cross, but we will discuss this and the condition of the glacier at the pretrip meeting. The link to the VOC wiki describing more about this summit and route can be found here; https://www.ubc-voc.com/wiki/Sky_Pilot, we will be taking the West Buttress route.

This trip could be for people who just did G1 and/or Rock 2 and want to practice some of those skills, or for those who didn’t get to go to either of those and would like to learn some things. If you’ve got a good amount of overnight and hiking experience and are really stoked about this trip, sign up and we can chat at the pretrip meeting about everyone’s current skill level. We do plan on making this an overnight as we don't plan to take the gondola, it’s a bit of a slog up to the glacier, and we want to have time to have fun, and do some learning. That being said, if people are super keen to do it in a day that’s an option as well. The whole route from the bottom of the gondola will be approximately 20km and 2000m of elevation, so whether we do it in 1 or 2 days, everyone will need to be comfortable with long days and have good fitness. If we happen to have enough people with 4wd and high clearance vehicles sign up, this trip could become a reasonable day trip, that would be 14km and about 1200m of elevation as we could drive up to the top of the gondola on the Stawamus-Indian FSR.

This trip will be no fun and far more dangerous in wet and/or slightly snowy conditions so if there is going to be rain or snow up there we will cancel the trip.
