Description:

UPDATE (Oct 1): out of an abundance of precaution I have taken a COVID test and most likely won't receive the test result before the start of the hike. Thus, the format of this trip has changed: participants (without me) will hike a section of the Forshore trail instead:

Meeting point is 17:00 at the traihead close to the Botanical garden. If you are interested in joining, please email me directly.

UPDATE (Sep 28): I got caught by surprise by the high interest in this trip, and it seems that we are (as of Sep 28) short of car seats. I will try my best to accommodate everyone, and we will discuss several options/solutions to this issue at the pre-trip meeting. However, if worst comes to worst, we might need to cut the participants list short (in the order of signup for the committed list). Sorry for that!

Did you ever wonder what the purpose of these two causeways in the midst of the sea south of campus is? And have you wondered whether these are walkable?

It turns out that at least the southern one, Iona jetty, is perfectly walkable. It makes a good 8km+ hike. The slightly longer North Arm jetty is less accessible and should only be walked at low tide. The answer for the first question can be found in this report.

The plan for this hike is to meet at 17:30 at the Iona park parking lot. We can first follow the alltrails route on Iona Jetty (that is just out and back on the jetty...), and then -depending on how much daylight time is left- explore some other parts of Iona park.

This trip is as beginner friendly as it gets. Judging from photos, one could probably do this hike -or rather this walk- safely in flip flops, or even barefoot. Still, I recommend wearing solid shoes and to bring some additional layers and a windproof jacket as I expect it to become quite chilly out there.

Some might find this trip boring, but if you are as excited as I am to walk 4km straight into the ocean!!, please join :)

Bonus: according to reviews on alltrails there are plenty of opportunities for bird + sealife + plane watching around Iona Jetty!
