Description:

Here's an inconvenient fact of you all: the BC outdoors scene, VOC included, continues to be a very cis-het-white-middle-to-upper-class-male space. While it is not necessarily 100% so, and I've been very lucky to have met many badass women leading trips and living it up, it persists.

While greater conversations and action around inclusivity and accessibility must be taken, I am here to start by providing a space for the femmes to get outdoors in an inclusive, beginner-friendly backpacking trip. Girls trip! All experience level is welcome, and all you need is plenty of stoke and willingness to hike in potentially miserable conditions (see Type II fun). No one will be left behind.

(As needed), I will break down all the details you need to know before setting into the woods to explore, learn something new, or to get away from school. The club rents out plenty of gear, and I will definitely help source/borrow unrentable gear. What you need is under the "Winter overnight trip" minus a few because the hut has things. Snow conditions is tbd, we will figure out if we need snowshoes/microspikes closer to the day. The hut will be sparingly heated, so it won't be as cold as camping outside but do bring lots of layers. I can also go over backcountry hygiene during periods.

We’ll arrive at the trailhead to Phelix on Saturday morning, and head up to the hut.  This should take around 5-7 hours (~10 km and 1000m elevation gain), but we can go at whatever pace makes sense with plenty of breaks. Once we arrive, we can explore the area or just chill. In the evening I have plenty of ideas for a potluck, sing and dance around, and a good old game of mafia. Bring your spooky stories! (just take a look your midterm schedule...) We will hike out casually the next day, possibly bringing down the decorations from the group the previous weekend, and make it back in time for Halloween parties or trick-or-treating ;)

I will need a few leaders who has more backcountry and backpacking experience(preferably have been to Phelix Hut before), so let me know if that's you in the sign up. If you have a vehicle, please sign up as we need cars to make this trip happen! We will figure out logistics and you can ask any questions at the pre-trip meeting. Shoot me a message if you have questions or concerns!

Now isn't challenging the patriarchy as spooky as it can get?

*I intend to expand this into a series of instructional trips for minoritized groups. Both allies and participants, keep an eye on the message board to get involved!

**Allies, if you have gear to share, or knowledge that can help out, please let me know.

***COVID-19: all participants must be FULLY vaccinated to be able to participate on this trip as per club and provincial guidelines. Masks during carpooling is encouraged.
