Description:
This is a long shot since the announcement of this trip is very short notice.. (like many others, I didn't make the shortlist of my favorite overnight trip for this weekend.)
We will hike up to the base of The West Lion following the standard route which starts at Cypress Mountain and goes via Saint Marks Summit and Unneccesary Mountain; see the alltrails route here. We are not going to scramble the last meters up to the peak as this would be too risky under current conditions!
- We will start the hike at 7:30am at the trailhead
- You should be appreciative of misty views. As of now, the weather forecast for Sunday doesn't seem to be too rainy, but you should be prepared nonetheless, both in terms of gear and mentally... :)
- There might be snow on some parts of the trail. In addition to hiking boots with ankle support and a sole with good grip, please make sure to bring microspikes!
- You should be comfortable with scrambling in possibly wet conditions. There are also a few exposed trail sections. That being said, if conditions are icy at critical parts of the trail, we will cut the hike short to avoid any unnecessary risks.
In summary, this is unfortunately not a beginner-friendly hike! Still, if you are unsure whether this hike is for you, or if you have any other questions regarding the hike, please feel free to get in touch. Also, if necessary, we can discuss other gear-related questions in the pre-trip meeting. Please also take a look at the VOC gear list for winter day hikes.
In case you are missing any essential gear: I will stop by at MEC on Saturday afternoon. If you let me know via email by say 2 pm what you need, I could buy these for you & bring all of these items to the hike for you.
