Description:

With inspiration from a Facebook post from South Coast Touring, (https://www.facebook.com/photo/?fbid=10227067963621846&set=gm.4721908844527429) supposedly Elfin Lakes in Garibaldi is in prime condition for alpine ice skating.

I have never done alpine ice skating, but the reports say the ice is at a safe thickness to skate on (>5in).

I have ice skates and to come, you probably want to bring your own (or you can just walk on the ice for fun).

Other gear

- winter hiking stuff incl warm layers, food, water

- microspikes recommended as the trail will be a little slick (I can acquire some if needed)

- in theory, one could use touring skis. I'd be up for this if other people in the group have skis and would rather ski. AST1 required + previous backcountry skiing experience. Ski crampons would be recommended, I'd say. But snowshoes/microspikes work fine too!

- ice axe (i can grab for others)

- life jackets (i can grab for others).

If you're interested at all and especially if you can drive, email me [email protected] ASAP

I was thinking about going up Thursday as I am tired today from Phelix trip this weekend, but Elfin Lakes is supposed to get substantial precipitation Thursday which would make ice skating less than ideal imo. So tomorrow/Tuesday or bust!

Safety is #1 priority. We might get there, do some ice thickness analysis and deem it not safe. I'm thinking of bringing a cordless drill and ruler to measure ice thickness link. I'm also learning today about different ice safety stuff link and will continue to learn throughout the day. Hopefully other people interested in coming will have some experience, but can also help learn.

Will make a call by 6:30pm! I can grab ice axes and life jackets for a few people if needed.
