Description:

Note: Trip is dependent on weather. If the forecast changes and looks better for Saturday we will switch to that day instead, or cancel if both days look particularly miserable. I will make this call no later than early Friday morning.

I've never been to the Sunshine Coast so would like to check it out by biking and hiking. Mount Elphinstone looks like a good introductory hike in the area as it's easily accessible from the Langdale ferry terminal. Overall it's a moderate trail, with 1065m of elevation gain over 6km one way. Depending on snow levels over this week it could even become a microspikes or snowshoe situation at the higher elevations. At the very least expect a muddy/wet/cold experience. We can always warm up with beers and/or warm drinks at a local brewery afterward.

The plan is simple - find your way to the Horseshoe Bay terminal at least 30 minutes before the 9:45am ferry departs. This can be via bike, bus, or car. I'll probably drive to somewhere like Whytecliff and bike from there (because I don't do mornings well), and have room for a few more bikes in my vehicle. I can set up a spreadsheet for meeting up to bike as a group from somewhere/ride share if there's demand for that as well. We'll grab the 9:45 ferry (cost is ~$13.90 return per person) and hang out until we land on the Sunshine Coast. From Langdale we will bike ~20-30 minutes to the trailhead for Elphinstone. There we'll lock up the bikes and go hiking. We'll return on either the 6:40pm ferry (most likely) or the 8:55pm if we're running later than that.

Things to bring:

- bike

- bike flat/repair kit

- bike lock

- daypack

- water (2L)

- headlamp

- rain gear (jacket, pants, gaitors, boots, etc)

- lunch

- money for ferry/food & drink if desired

- mask/vaccine pass
