Have you wanted to get out in the backcountry but not know where to start? Have you signed up for many trips but never gotten a spot? Do you want to learn helpful skills to be more confident accessing the backcountry safely? If so, this event is for you!

Join myself (Melissa, Membership Chair), Isaac (Trips Coordinator), and a few other experienced VOCers for a two hour info session and workshop on trip planning.

The event will be made up of a presentation, a Q+A, and a rotation-style workshop section where you will work in small groups to practice trip planning. The goal of the event is to walk away with more knowledge and skills to hopefully lead your own trip, or at least feel more confident going to an unknown place for the first time.

Topics covered will include choosing a destination, determining a goal, gathering information (route, travel, permits, weather, avalanche conditions for winter activities, aka what to google), pre-trip meeting organization (writing a trip description, using the signup tools, leading pre-trip meeting, organizing car groups, email faff, organizing emergency contacts), post-trip tasks (gas money nudges, picture sharing, trip report voluntelling), risk mitigation, group decision making, asking for help, editing the wiki (a workhike!), and more.

Location tbd, likely somewhere in the Nest.

Location is set to https://www.nestcatering.com/our-space/unique-venues/michael-kingsmill-forum/ 4th floor [right off the main stairs]

Location is now changed to AMS NEST room 2301.

If you are interested in helping out in leading a workshop booth or have other ideas to contribute, email me!
