Description:

So if you are helplessly addicted to refreshing the trip agenda like I am, you may have seen a trip over reading break going up to Sphinx hut. Unfortunately, due to weather, we ended up going to a different hut, although I'd still like to go up to Sphinx this ski season!

INFO:

The Sphinx/Burton hut is the VOC’s oldest hut, and is located next to garibaldi lake (Sphinx Bay). There is a very solid skin up (1000+m elevation gain and ~14km) and because of this, Sphinx cannot really be considered a beginner objective, so you must have some experience in the backcountry, and be comfortable with this distance/elevation on skis and with heavy packs. You should be comfortable with your backcountry setup, i.e, maybe not the trip to try out the club's tele skis for the first time. AST1 or equivalent experience will be required as well.

There's lots of skiing around the hut, some accessible only by crossing glaciers (The Sphinx, Bookworms, Guard/Deception), and some not (Mt. Price, Garbage Pile, Panorama Ridge).  Those wanting to do any objective requiring glacier travel must have G1 or equivalent experience, although if enough are interested in teaching and enough are interested in learning, we could run a dry school beforehand to cover the basics of G1.

A wilderness permit is required to stay at the hut because it is in Garibaldi Provincial Park, this will be 10$ per person per night. This trip also may be canceled if avi or weather is atrocious.

LOGISTICS:

The plan would be to meet up at the Rubble Creek Trailhead early Friday morning and skin up to the hut. Saturday we could split up according to comfort level/objectives or stick together as one big group and hopefully get in some great skiing. Sunday we will eventually make our way back to the cars.

Quick note, I have to get back to an internet connection by Monday (ewww, work), although it looks like UBC gives both Friday and Monday off. If there is interest, I could organize a group coming back Sunday and a group coming back Monday.

GEAR:

I am not going to be covering winter camping gear extensively, because I assume you will have had some experience with winter camping and generally know what is necessary for you, although the Gear List is a good place to start if you are unsure. Since we are staying in a hut we might not need tents, although the hut is small and there may be others there so it will be necessary to bring a couple. Additionally, since we will be in avalanche terrain so you will need a Shovel, Beacon, Probe, and knowledge of how to use them
