Description:

I promise this is an actual trip and not the setup to some elaborate April Fools joke!

The Brian Waddington Hut (Phelix Hut) is located north of Pemberton. The route to the hut is about 10km long and 1000m of elevation gain, and according to the VOC Wiki, takes about 5-7 hours to complete. There is a ton of terrain to access from the hut, so there is no shortage of skiing options! See the Wiki Page for more info about ski routes around the hut and about the hut itself.

Theoretically you can fit 31 people in this hut. However, I don't want to lead a 31 person trip because the better part of the week leading up to the trip for me would be spent herding cats and much of the time on the trip itself would be spent waiting in the outhouse line. I would like to limit the trip to around 2 cars or ~10 people at most. If more people than that sign up as interested, decisions about who is going will be made at pre trip, with priority going to drivers, strong commitment level, and people with previous experience in the area (I've never been to Phelix so it would be welcome if somebody who has been there comes along).

Logistics:

Friday: leave Vancouver early in the morning in order to give us plenty of time to complete the skin to the hut before dark. If we're speedy we could perhaps ski a bit after arrival.

Saturday: Ski objectives around the hut, depending on conditions and group preferences, potentially splitting into 2 groups for the day.

Sunday: Ski a little in the morning before cleaning up the hut and skiing out.

Potential to stay an extra day (leaving Monday instead of Sunday) depending on how the group is feeling, the conditions, homework situation, etc.

Requirements:

  • AST 1 or equivalent
  • Backcountry touring experience. Multiday winter trip experience is not required, but encouraged.
  • Fitness. The route to the hut is long and has a significant amount of elevation gain, you'll need to have the endurance to do this while carrying a heavy overnight pack. I encourage people to challenge themselves, but at the same time please be realistic in evaluating your own abilities!
  • Gear. A list of multiday ski trip gear can be found on this page of the VOC Wiki. Some of these items can be borrowed from the club, if needed.

Miscellaneous:

According to a recent report on the hut registration page, there is low supply of firewood at the hut currently which may be gone by the time we get there. There is a propane heater to use if this is case.

This trip may be cancelled or rescheduled if weather or avalanche conditions are terrible.

Finally, pranks of the hilarious and harmless nature are strongly encouraged ;)
