Have you ever been hiking and thought, this is just way too flat? Have you ever thought, I would love to cling to that beautiful, smooth, moist cliff face by nothing but my finger tips? Have you ever wanted to hang many metres above the ground on nothing but a rope thinner than your pinky finger? If you answered yes to all of these questions, we have the perfect opportunity for you!

On this trip, you will learn to climb and belay your friends outdoors. After this trip, you should be able to pass your belay test at the Aviary (UBC's own affordable sport climbing gym). This trip will be an opportunity for you to try something that you have never tried before, or, to reignite the confidence you experienced in the climbing gym as a nimble 7 year-old on a school field trip.

Information:

This trip is led by Emi Ikemura and Zac Wirth.

We will be capping at 8 participants (this is the first trip that we are leading!). If you are unable to make this trip, Son of Rock, which is happening in May is another great time to learn how to climb!

Priority will be given to drivers and people on the committed list. The committed list will open a few days before the pre-trip meeting, which will be some time in the week before the trip. Before signing up as committed, make sure that you are able to make the pre-trip meeting as it is a requisite to coming on the trip.

The only cost associated with this trip will be gas money for your driver, probably around $10, but drivers have the final say on their respective gas costs.

Gear:

Helmets are mandatory and thet can be rented from the VOC. Bike helmets work but are not ideal.

Climbing shoes and a climbing harness can also be rented from the VOC, but make sure to try them on (they should be snug but not uncomfortable) to make sure they fit.

A belay device (ATC, GriGri) and a locking carabiner are necessary but the VOC does not rent these out. ATCs cost $23-30 at MEC, or you can borrow one from a friend. We will have a couple extra to lend out if we don't have enough.

Make sure you bring water, food, and layers; we will be outside for many hours!

Logistics:

We will plan to leave Vancouver in the morning around 8am and be back in the evening, probably by 7pm but timing is flexible. Car groups can organize themselves on when they need to be back. Further logistics will be discussed at the pre-trip meeting.

We will be climbing at Smoke Bluffs in Squamish, about 1 hour from Vancouver. The area has a lot of variety and some really good beginner routes to hone your skills.

Disclaimer: we are not certified instructors and your safety is ultimately your responsability.
