Description:

Tenting on spearhead

Howdy VOC! We're planning a Spearhead trip next weekend and are looking for some advanced skiers to join us in this adventure.

The Spearhead Traverse is a classic and spectacular route linking the Blackcomb and Whistler ski resorts via a horseshoe of glacier-clad alpine terrain. The traverse connects 11 glaciers while weaving around 17 peaks 😎

Lou Bunce and I are planning to tackle the traverse over 2 days plus a buffer / flex day which might be used to wait out weather, or used to shred some extra peaks on the third day near Kees and Claire hut. If we take the gondola at the start it's roughly 1400m elevation / 16km day 1 and 700m elevation / 9km day 2. Lou and I are second season backcountry skiers and strong downhill skiers.

This trip travels through complex, high-risk terrain and requires good navigation and decision making skills. There are a minimum of 16 transitions, so speed and efficiency are important. AST1, 10 days experience, and a good level of fitness are the minimum requirements. A bonus would be people with glacier school or glacier travel experience.

We are aiming for a group size of 3-6, so the trip group will be determined at the pre-trip meeting.

This trip is also weather dependent as navigation requires good visibility. A bluebird weekend would be preferable. We may move the trip if avalanche risk is considerable/high, or if visibility is low.
