Description:

This little workshop is designed for anyone who has a bike, or is thinking of getting a bike, or has dreams of going on self-propelled adventures and bike tours, or simply is interested in bikes, but doesn't have much experience fixing them.

I'm hoping to lead some beginner friendly bike touring trips over the summer, and this workshop would be a great starting point for anyone who'd like to participate in future self-propelled trips but doesn't have much experience. In this workshop we'll be covering the basics of bike maitenance to give you the confidence to take on the roads and trails and fix the most common bike failures along the way. Melissa Bernstein ran a similar workshop last year which I learned a lot from, so I'd like to pass on the knowledge!

We will be covering:

- Basic bike anatomy. What are the so many different parts on the bicycle and what is each of them called?

- Wheels (changing a tire, types of flat tires, how to avoid them, and how to fix them)

- Drivetrain (cleaning and lubricating the chain)

- Brakes (types, barrel adjustment)

- Information about self-propelled adventures (bike touring vs bikepacking, types of bikes, gear, planning, route finding, community, etc)

This workshop will be hosted by me and bike man extraordinaire Kai Schwarz (he's the actual instructor). It is weather dependant, but will probably be held in either Chaldecott Park (Dunbar area, near Pacific Spirit Park) or our backyard nearby. If the weather is miserable we'll take refuge in the garage.

If you have any questions, send them my way ([email protected]) or to Kai ([email protected]) himself. There won't be a pre-trip meeting, I'll send an email with exact location closer to date.
