Description:

Do you like biking? Do you like camping? Have you always wanted to put your camping gear on a bike and go on an overnight bike trip? Or are you a seasoned bike packer looking to have a chill trip with some VOCers? Then this might be the trip for you.
We are going to camp on Gabriola Island, which is a little island off the coast of Nanaimo. We will leave Vancouver early morning on Saturday, bike to Horseshoe Bay, take the first ferry to Nanaimo, bike to another ferry station close by, take the second ferry, and arrive at Gabriola island. The campsite is close to the ferry station (around 2km), so we can drop off our gear, set up camp, and then go explore the island by foot or by bike. On Sunday, we will repeat the same steps in reverse order.

Requirements:

Gear
- A bike (any functioning bike will do)
- Basic overnight camping gear (tent, sleeping bag, sleeping pad, food, etc. see VOC wiki for a comprehensive list)
-  Some method of carrying the above gear on your bike (Panniers, basket, stapping things to your bike, bikepacking bags, whatever you like, but I would advise against large backpacks)
- Bike lights (mandatory)
- Helmet (mandatory)
- Spare tubes for your tires (mandatory – you can get this at the bike kitchen)
- Basic flat-fix toolkit (optional)
- Rain Gear

Costs:
 - Expect to pay around $5-10 for the campsite (depending on how many of us there are)
 - Cost of Ferry – Vancouver to Nanaimo is $18, and Nanaimo to Gabriola is $11 (round-trip)

Fitness:
 - You should be comfortable riding your bike for at least 40km on rather hilly roads. The trip is “beginner friendly” in the sense that we will go at a chill pace and not leave anyone behind, but that doesn’t mean the biking itself will be easy. I’ve tried to choose the easiest and closest destination for a bike tour but biking anywhere in BC means going up and down many hills and this is no exception.
 - you should be comfortable biking on the side of major roads alongside cars. This is a safety concern, so I am going to be strict about it.

* If you’d like to come but are unsure if this is the right trip for you (experience, gear, etc.) send me or Kai Schwarz an email ([email protected]) and let’s have a chat. :)
Pre-trip meeting is mandatory!
