Description:

It's time for another trip to Harrison Hut! Of all four VOC huts, Harrison may be the most logistically complicated to access. Due to landslides, logging and grizzly bears, the road to our trail is gated and locked at 2 KM in spring and fall. However, the VOC has a permit to get a key to access the road so that we can visit our hut for maintenance trips.

We will get to the hut by a 4-6 hour drive, followed by 6 km of hiking/skiing/snowshoeing. The permit allows for four cars, meaning a maximum of 20 people can come on the trip. The hut is large enough to sleep most of the group, but people should still be open to bringing tents and sleeping outside if need be. We will leave Friday night and camp at the 2km gate, and then drive the rest of the way Saturday morning, reaching the hut Saturday afternoon. We will head out the next day, and be back in Vancouver late Sunday night. There may be a possibility to do some skiing from the hut as well, which we can chat about once interest is established for the workhike. For those interested in adding a ski traverse, we would be likley be back in Vancouver on Tuesday night.

We can go over the work that may need to be done at pre pre-trip meeting, but it will probably involve hauling out old debris, clearing the trail of obstacles, checking the state of the outhouse, and checking the amount of stored firewood.

Harrison is a very special hut in a very beautiful place. It’s too bad that we can’t always access it easily, but this is a great opportunity to spend some time with the hut and get to know the area. This trip is particularly great for people who are interested in getting involved with VOC hut maintenance. If you have any questions or are interested in getting involved in more trips like this one, don’t hesitate to email me!
