Description:

UPDATE: It is pouring rain and a whiteout. No sunset will be seen. We are at the parking lot in case anyone shows up but probably not much later than 7pm

I'm a big fan of watching sunsets from snowy mountains, and the summer solstice is usually the most special one you get each year. Last year I was fortunate enough to go to the amazing annual Mount Hood solstice celebration, and while I'm a bit bummed I won't make it this year I'm hoping to recreate a little bit of that magic on the closest thing Metro Vancouver has to a drive-up 3400 m volcano, Mount Seymour.

My plan is to drive on up to the parking lot right after work, hike to find a spot with a view somewhere between first and third peak, and hangout until around 10pm when it starts to get too dark. Bring whatever you think will let you have the most fun for the evening, whether it be some beverages, a chair, dinner, etc. Be prepared for walking on very slushy snow, good shoes and something to sit on are essential, and a headlamp for the way back. I might be bringing skis and a shovel because I am obsessed (although there should be ok snow with how great this spring has been!). This will be a casual event like the VOC BBQs (albeit more poorly executed and harder to get to), so anyone who wants is welcome to come, show up whenever you want, and leave whenever you want. I will try and set up somewhere visible and carve a giant "VOC" in the snow so you can find me, if someone from exec is coming and wants to bring the sign that would be great. If people want to go with me at the start to avoid having to search, I will wait by the trailhead until 6pm. The hike is ~2 km with moderate elevation gain and should take no more than an hour at a comfortable pace.
