Description:

Hi everyone!

This trip is replacing Sam Viavant's "Phucking Long Phelix Traverse" trip, originally planned for 6/30-7/3, since the ridgeline is too snowy to have a nice and easy traverse (Sam’s postponing this trip until later in the summer).

The new (rough) plan is to drive up to the trailhead early on Friday, get to Phelix hut, and possibly do a short scramble or trek, scrambling around in the snow (bring gaiters and possibly rain/snow pants, or be prepared for wet legs) Saturday and part of Sunday, and heading back down to the cars Sunday early afternoon!

Sam says avi risk is the main risk, but hopefully shouldn’t be bad due to some condensing happening lately. Weather is looking a little iffy right now (some rain over each of the three days in the surrounding mountains), hopefully it improves a bit.

Full disclosure: this is the first trip I’m leading in the VOC, and it’s been a while since I’ve been up to Phelix (pre-pandemic). Getting to the hut shouldn’t be an issue, and I don’t think scrambling around will be one either, but some backcountry self-sufficiency and experience scrambling (bonus points for scrambling in snowy conditions) would be good to have if you want to come on this trip!

All the trip details are still a bit tentative (this post may be updated soon), but I’m stoked! Hope you are too!
