Description:

For a while, I've really wanted to do the Howe Sound Crest trail, but due to various circumstances I haven't been able to. Well this time, I'm determined to make it happen.

Join me on labour day weekend for lots of elevation gains and losses, scrambles, and amazing views! Disclaimer: I'm not a fast hiker and I like taking my time. I'm leaning towards doing the hike as a two nighter, so the pace will be pretty moderate. This being said it is not a trip for beginners.

Trail details:

- Point to point hike from cypress parking lot to porteau cove

- Total distance ~33km, Cumulative Elevation Gain ~1,830m gain / 2,600m descent. Lots of steep ascents and descents, exposure, and technical bits.

- Very limited water sources. from what I read, ppl suggest bringing around 4L at least?

Proposed itinerary:

Day 1: Cypress parking lot, short detour to st. marks, to Mt. Unessecary ridge (~8km from cypress and +800m elevation) OR to base of lions (~10km from cypress and +950m), or somewhere in between

Day 2: Hopefully scramble West lion**, up and over thomas james and david peak, through magnesia meadows, up mt. brunswick then to brunswick lake,  (~7 km too lazy to calculate all the up and downs)

Day 3: Descend past a couple of lakes all the way to porteau cove (~8.6 km, -1100m elevation)

**I've heard different reviews about the west lion scramble. Some say it's totally managable, others say its extremely extremely dangerous. I would really love to give it a go, but definitely safety first. I've been on two trips where I've had to call search and resuce (for other hikers) and i don't want this to be another.

As a side note, I would say I have moderate backpacking experience, beginner-moderate climbing experience, and limited scrambling experience. If you have more experience/expertise in these areas, let me know if you want to co-lead/help out more during the hike!

Logistics:

As it's a point to point hike, we will need to shuttle. I'm capping the trip at five people, so I need one more vehicle to shuttle.

Pre trip will be a short zoom meeting. As it's a more difficult trail, I wanna make sure we are all on the same page.

Group gear wise, it would be great if some one has bear hang equipment they could bring.

Lastly, the trip is weather dependent, as it would be dangerous to be travelling in the technical sections if it's raining. Fingers crossed.
