Description:

Start the school year off on the right pedal and join me and other VOCers and Bike Kitchen lovers for a social ride. We will be passing along the beaches for sunset and around the Stanley Park seawall to see the stars and maybe even go for a little dip! Think critical mass meets outdoor education. Inspired by Boulder bike nights

What is the VOC? The VOC stands for the Varsity Outdoor Club. It's not really varsity. Were a handful of students and non-students of all ages who like doing things outside, whether that ranges from social rides like these, day hikes, intro and advanced rock climbing (see Rock Party), backcountry skiing, paddling, and mountaineering. Check out our instagram from pretty pictures that highlight the less miserable moments of our adventures.

What is the Bike Kitchen? The Bike Kitchen is UBC's very own community bike store located in the Life Building on campus. From their website, the Bike Kitchen "provides students and the wider community with an accessible environment where they can learn to fix bikes, share resources, and work together". The Bike Kitchen runs awesome outreach programs like Access nights where you can learn from experienced mechanics on fixing your own bike, and run community programs like Kids Bike Library and Bici Libre, in addition to being a full service bike shop. They also sell refurbished used bikes, but they usually get sold fast!

Details

Free and all are welcome! You don't need to be a VOC member or UBC affiliated. Women, gender-nonconfirming, POC, and anyone else who doesn't fit in the mold of a Tour De France racer is encouraged to come!

Wednesday September 7

7pm meet outside Bike Kitchen in the treed area just west of the Life Building here, departing 715

The Bike Kitchen is usually open from 10-6pm on Wednesday, but they will be open an extra hour, from 6-7pm, just for folks going on the ride. Inside, you can buy yourself a small repair kit by buying a spare tube, tire levers, a patch kit, and a bike pump. Also, because we will be riding in the dark, lights will be required so you can buy a set at the shop if you don't already have some.

Myself and other VOCers will be outside the shop starting at 6pm with a repair stand or two helping people pump up their tires and putting chain lube on. We can also do quick safety checks and maybe do tiny adjustments. The repair stands will stay out until 715, but the shop will close promptly at 7. Try to come closer to 6pm to not overwhelm the kind bike store employees that are graciously staying open later for our ride.

There will be a few quick words by me (Melissa), Zoe (Bike Kitchen Programs Manager), and a few VOC exec members before we depart.

The Route

https://ridewithgps.com/routes/40800633

Start - outside the Bike Kitchen (6-7 fix your bike, 7pm meeting, 715pm departing)
Sunset - Tolmie & NW Marine Drive (730-750pm)

Swim - 3rd beach, Stanley Park (8:30 - 8:45pm)

End - Breka 4/Alma, 9pm

UBC group - 9:30-10pm

Mix of paved and light gravel.

The ride will take place and travel through the unceeded stolen land of the Musqueam peoples. Many of us are visitors on this land and we should keep that in mind as we enjoy the evening and make new friendships. Fun fact: we will be crossing over the new Senawk development near the Burrard Bridge on our ride.

What to bring

front and rear lights (required)

ideally a pump, spare tube, and repair kit (encouraged)

gears (optional)

helmet (required)

water (encouraged)

working bike that you can stop (aka working brakes or not-a-first-time-fixie-rider) (you can run if you want)

Optional but encouraged: wacky outfits/shirts/costumes/holiday lights, bells, whistles, textbooks, chegg subscription, answer keys

How to signup

Fill out THIS SIGNUP FORM and fill out the VOC waiver if you're not already a member (linked in the form) if you're planning on going.

Again, everyone is welcome no matter your age, experience, involvement with the VOC or Bike Kitchen or even UBC!

Bring your friends, but please have them fill out the form prior to the ride! We need the waivers so we have insurance for the ride (though hopefully we won't need it!)

Other things

This is a guided ride with experienced people at front and back (who hopefully know the route), but ultimately you are responsible for yourself. If you leave the ride early, just let a ride leader know so they don't wait up for you. I'd recommend bringing your bus pass in case you need to bus back (tired, mechanical, homework (lame)) or dip early from the ride. This is a beginner friendly trip and will be mostly type 1 even if it's raining, but let's not jinx it.

ALSO, There will be a PRIZE for the most well decorated rider (you don't have to be a voc member to win)!!

Any questions, email me [email protected] or stalk me on Facebook through the VOC's Facebook group. I do it too so it's cool

This is the first of hopefully more partnerships with the UBC Bike Kitchen. This ride couldn’t have happened without the teamwork with Zoe, the Bike Kitchen’s program manager. Thanks Zoe!
