Description:

Calling all climbers who enjoyed the extra summer weather we had this month! Did you check the forecast for this weekend and get bummed that the cold weather and rain is finally coming? Then this trip is for you! I went to Smith Rock last summer and immediately started planning a return trip. It has some of the BEST sport climbing in the states, over 1200 routes all in one place!

The tentative plan is to drive down Tuesday and camp at a free site about 10 minutes from the park. The drive is long (but worth it IMO); maps will tell you 8.5 hours, but with faff it turns into 10. We spend all of Wednesda, Thursday, Friday, Saturday climbing whatever we want or just exploring if we want to take a break. Days are getting shorter so I checked sunset/rise charts, and it's looking like our climbing window will be roughly 7am-5pm. In the evenings we can spend some time in Bend, they've got cute breweries (and kombucha on tap!). Sunday we can spend the morning climbing and then head back to reality in Vancouver.

Please note that although this will be much warmer and dryer than a Vancouver November it will not be summer weather. I've checked predictive forecasts, and it's looking like a sunny-and-15 C during the day, going down to 0 C at night. Smith is known as a year-round climbing place, however we will be camping, so please be prepared for that.

Lastly, Smith is mainly a sport climbing destination. There is some trad as well, but very little top rope. For this trip I am emphasizing a Rock 3 or equivalent baseline climbing level. If you are eager to join but do not know how to lead climb yet, you can get in touch and we may be able to work something out (there is still time to learn and practise, but let's talk about it.) Smith is also famously known for its very high first bolts, so stick clips are encouraged.

Please feel free to reach out, I'm open to suggestions as this is all a tentative plan right now! Looking forward to climbing with you all soon.
