Description:

Missed G1 and still eager to learn some glacier skills? Or maybe you just can't commit a full weekend to freeze on a glacier? Just want to practice some rusty skills? Come to this dry school to learn some basics.

Who is this trip for?

This pulleys in the park trip will be covering some of the ropework and skills associated with safely travelling on glaciers (G1 level). This trip is open to all but IT IS MANDATORY if you are going on G1 Lite.

Agenda:

We'll split into groups and each group will have an instructor work through some of the essential knowledge you'll need:

  • Knots and how to rope up on a glacier
  • Ascending a rope (tentative, but probably a requirement for the G1 people)
  • Anchor building (in snow/ice)
  • 3:1 Haul systems

Pre-requisites:

Optional but super helpful:

Logistics:

We'll try and find a park to do this outside, but I'll send a follow up email with more information. For now presume we are meeting outside the clubroom. If you are going on G1 Lite please bring your harness (if you don't have one you can rent these from the VOC). If you're just coming on the dry school then don't bother checking one out from the VOC. If you have cordellete/slings then maybe bring that as it'll help for practicing anchors and knot tying. Pints are an optional piece of gear you may choose to bring.

Instructors for glacier school are club members who volunteer their time, and are not professional guides. If you don't feel comfortable taking responsibility for your own life in the context of an informal course advised by VOC instructors, you should take a mountaineering course offered by a professional guiding service.
