Description:

We are currently experiencing an unusual November dry spell. While backcountry skiing may be suffering, rock climbing is thriving.

Murrin park is near Squamish and is home to hundreds of sport/trad climbs. A sunny* wall at Murrin called Woodstock offers a variety of sport/trad climbing in the 5.8 - 5.10d range. I've spent two days in the past couple of weeks enjoying dry and reasonably warm climbing there.

Rock 3** preferred, but total beginners are welcome depending on the number of car spots and ropes - the VOC rents climbing gear if you need some. If any crushers are interested, Pet Wall offers sunny 5.11 - 5.13 climbing just a few minutes walk from Woodstock.

There will be no pre-trip meeting, only a Whatsapp group chat and maybe some spreadsheets to sort out gear and car spots. I will send the links to those out via email.

*This trip is dependent on the weather. The forecast currently says no rain, but that could change.

** Explanation of rock levels:

  • Rock 1: top-roping: Learn to put on a harness, belay and climb rock.
  • Rock 2: anchor building: Learn to build different types of anchors for the purpose of top roping. Learn how to rappel.
  • Rock 3: sport climbing: Learn to clip bolts, lead belay, how not to back-clip or z-clip, etc...
  • Rock 4: trad climbing: Learn how to place a variety of protection, build trad anchors, etc...
  • Rock 5: introduction to multi-pitch climbing: Learn how to use rope systems, build tree anchors, belay from the top of the climb, switch leads, etc.
