Description:

Winter longhike is the VOC’s big annual winter camping trip. We’ll march out somewhere with microspikes/snowshoes and set up for the night. To make things interesting, rather than sleeping in a tent, we’ll be making snow shelters. Ie. quinzees, snow caves, or just a snow trench (if you don’t mind freezing all night). Before bed we’ll have some mulled wine and general festivities.

Here’s a nice video that’ll give you an idea about what’s involved in building a quinzee: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z5aHvLUe9co

Pre-reqs: None, this is a beginner-friendly trip. Those new to winter outdoor adventures are especially encouraged to come. Priority will be by order of the committed list.

Gear Required: Unfortunately, the VOC only has some gear available to rent, so some stuff like layers and a sleeping bag you’ll need to supply yourself.

Things you need to supply yourself:

  • Warm layers (NO COTTON), good for temperatures down to -10
  • Puffy
  • Waterproof gloves
  • Warm socks
  • Waterproof jacket/pants
  • Hat
  • Sleeping bag rated to at least -10
  • Food + stove + fuel
  • A headlamp
  • Toilet paper

Things you can rent or buy from the VOC:

  • Microspikes (buy) or snowshoes (rent)
  • Boots
  • Gaiters
  • Backpack
  • Sleeping pad
  • Shovel

For anything I might’ve missed, please take a look here when you’re preparing your kit: https://www.ubc-voc.com/wiki/Gear_Lists#Winter_Overnight.

Other info:  We’ll probably be going to red heather hut area to do this, so the trip fee (camping and communal wine) will be ~$15 per person.
