Description:

The Simple Joys of William Ungar Memorial trip to Brian Waddington (Phelix) Hut is an event organized by the VOC in memory of VOC exec William Ungar, who passed away in a climbing accident in September 2022. We feel that the best tribute to Will is to get out and spend time in the place he loved the most - the mountains.

Gone far too soon, Will packed more lifetimes into his 21 years than most ever will in a century. He truly lived life to the fullest, never missing an opportunity to climb a mountain, ski the steeps or make someone laugh uncontrollably. Will was funny, kind, intelligent, adventurous and unapologetically himself. His appetite for life's biggest adventures was only paralleled by his appetite for the most bizarre option on the menu. Whether he was in Colorado or Canada, Will effortlessly skied off cliffs, climbed up peaks, and debated just about anything from politics to privatized water (https://www.legacy.com/us/obituaries/denverpost/name/william-ungar-obituary?id=36454315)

This trip will have a few special additions to honour Will's vibrant spirit:

- Please bring 1 "Simple Joys of" object with you, the more large and bulky the better. Something that brings you joy, represents joy, or reminds you of Will

- Simple Joys Sunrise group tour on Sunday AM, we will enjoy the sunrise, have a coffee/tea and ski down in style

The Plan: March 10-12

  • Thursday, March 9: Mandatory pre-trip meeting on Zoom 8-9pm, **email [email protected] if you cannot make it**

  • Friday, March 9 (optional): Drive up to 2wd parking at your convenience, sleep at the TH
  • Saturday, March 10: Drive Van->2wd parking (~4hours); Tour to Phelix hut ~12km, 1100m gain, approx. 8-10hour skin
  • Sunday, March 11: Simple Joys Sunrise tour @Cabin Hill; descend and return to Vancouver, approx. 8hr day
  • Monday, March 12 (optional): descend and return to Vancouver, approx. 8hr day

Car groups/tents/stove sharing will be sent out via google sheet to the committed list Monday, March 6

Experience Required:

  • Getting to and from Phelix: snowshoe or be able to ski/board blue runs confidently.
  • Skiing around and above Phelix Hut: AST1 and Avalanche gear (Probe, shovel, transceiver) and knowledge on how to use it is mandatory

In general, AST 1 is strongly recommended. If you don't have it, you must make sure that your car group AND your ski group are comfortable with you joining them.

Before signing up please make sure your emergency contact information is filled out on your user profile! Do so here: http://www.ubc-voc.com/members/edit_emergencyinfo

Things to Bring:

Required Gear List:

  • Avalanche gear (probe, beacon, shovel): Rentable
  • Skis/splitboard/Snowshoes: Rentable
  • Warm clothes
  • Warm sleeping bag and mat, extra warm if sleeping in a tent.
  • A tent, if you have one/want a modicum of privacy
  • Food, fuel and a stove to cook it with
  • HEADLAMP!!
  • A "Simple Joys of" item, the more large/awkward/heavy the better

Check out the gear list for specifics.

It can get noisy and crowded inside so some people may prefer to tent outside, but if it's -30C outside and +5C inside, that's a fairly compelling reason to sleep inside. There is a limited amount of space in the loft (31 people) so if you would like a spot sign up early. If you are only coming up for one night, consider bringing up a tent so that people staying more than one night don't have to switch between the hut and a tent.

Optional:

  • Snacks to share for Simple Joys of a Sunrise
  • Your favorite beverage(s) for Saturday Festivities

For VOC members staying at the Hut is free! If you being driven by someone, make sure to contribute some gas money for their efforts. Other than that though, there is no "tickets" or other cost so if you are on a budget, borrow a pair of tele skis from the club, grab a beacon and come celebrate the Simple Joys

Peer Support Group:

The peer support group was created to ensure that a comfortable and safe environment is maintained within the VOC. There are six members of the peer support group, both males and females, dedicated to maintaining this environment within the club. We encourage everyone to approach any of our peer support members (whom are listed under the exec members on the membership page if you have felt uncomfortable, or have witnessed a situation of discomfort, harassment of any form or felt lack of safety on any of our trips that you wish to discuss and seek a resolution for. Resolutions can vary from simply having a misunderstanding cleared up to helping provide support for resolving any issues between two people in a safe environment.
