Description:

I am hoping to take an exploratory route out from Phelix after Burns n’ Turns to climb and ski a couple of sweet looking peaks that are a bit farther from the hut. The plan is to join Ross’ FABULOUS Burns n’ Turns trip through until Monday morning and then head out towards Tolkien and exit via Mt. John Decker. It’ll be about 16km and 1100m of skiing from Phelix Hut to the cars, maybe a bit more if we camp/do laps by the lake before Tolkien.

We’ll do this as either a big day Monday or incl 1 night camping along the way: we will decide closer to the date (but Phelix is over capacity so we can be part of the Burns n’ Turns crew that tents either way).

As my mystery potential co-trip leader and I have never been to Tolkien and John Decker we’re looking to keep the group small and fairly advanced (we may encounter bootpacks, steep sidehilling and skiing, and shitty trees): ideally you have AST1, at least 1 tent-based overnight ski trip under your belt, and can confidently ski black diamond runs (i.e., we might do that with overnight packs). If you’re on the fence about whether or not that’s you, please contact me, I’d love to chat and would rather you reach out than not sign up!! :)

We will organize our own cars (so priority will be given to folks with cars), and each of us will help as a group leader on Saturday morning on the way up to Phelix!

Here's a caltopo drawing of an approximate route:
