Description:

I love the Bike Kitchen and I think a lot of VOCers do to. Remember those fun bike rides in the fall - that was a VOCxBK collab! Most of my bike adventures have been supported by the BK in some way. Also, the BK has always been a friendly and welcoming safe space for me during my 5?6? years at UBC.

Unfortunately, the BK has been hit hard financially since the move out of the Life Building in 2016. Combined with COVID and a global supply chain issue for most of 2020/2021, the BK is wanting to raise their student fees from $1.17 to $4.17. They tried last year and the refendum question got added to the AMS ballot, but they were a few hundred people short of raising the fees. This year, I'm trying to help out by spreading the word so hopefully the hundreds of students that see this post 1. can help get the question on the ballot and 2. vote and spread the word when AMS elections open March 6-10 :D You can sign up to help volunteer with me on the link below and/or donate too if you're able/not a student anymore!

We [Bike Kitchen] are looking to put our fee increase question on the ballot in the 2023 and need 1000 signatures from current UBC Vancouver students to do so.
Please sign the petition to support our ballot question:

*signing the petition does not mean you’ve voted Yes - you will need to vote Yes during the election period March 6th - March 10th through the online voting link sent to all UBC students.

Question

Do you support increasing the AMS Bike Co-op/Bike Kitchen fee to $4.17 to support accessible and affordable transportation through increased programming, alleviate its pandemic-related accumulated debt, and invest in sustainable and active transportation for the UBC community?

Note 1: This constitutes a $3 increase from the current AMS Bike Co-op/Bike Kitchen fee.

Note 2: The fee will continue to be fully refundable upon request through a digital opt-out

Note 3: The fee will continue to be indexed annually according to the BC Consumer Price Index

 WHY SUPPORT THE BIKE KITCHEN?

This year the Bike Kitchen will be celebrating 25 years of providing affordable and accessible transportation to UBC students, staff and community members. However, since the onset of the pandemic in 2020, the Bike Kitchen has been hit hard financially. We estimate that we have lost approximately $250,000 in revenue, causing us to stagnate employee wages, reduce benefits to students, and increase prices to keep afloat. Last year we were unsuccessful in passing a referendum fee increase by 300 votes. We are again asking for an increase in our yearly fee from $1.17 to $4.17 (a $3 increase) to get us back on track to pay liveable wages, expand programming, get out of debt, and build on the success of our long standing community bike shop. We are an opt-out fee. This means students can support sustainable and affordable transportation by voting yes to the fee increase and still opt-out at the start of their academic term if they choose to.
