Description:

Cancelled as the vis seems poor on Saturday, when we'd be doing the most skiing. People can reach out to me if they are interested in a day trip or skiing in Whistler, as discussed in the pretrip.

Let's go to Burton (Sphinx) hut for some backcountry skiing! This trip is similar to Anton's trip to the Table, except that we want to focus more on the skiing part (i.e. stay at Sphinx Bay on Saturday).

The idea is to skin up to the hut on Friday and probably set up camp there (since the hut may be quite full). Then, Saturday and Sunday morning we want to ski around the hut (maybe go up to Sphinx/ other objectives, depending on what people feel like). Around lunch time on Sunday, we will then make our way back to the cars (yes, that involves skiing down the Rubble creek switchbacks, yay!).

This trip is not suitable for people who are very new to skiing and backpacking. However, this is a great trip for people who have backcountry skiing experience already and would like to get out more! While the skinning up to where we camp will not involve any avalanche terrain, the slopes at Sphinx Bay are in avalanche terrain, and good decision making will be required by all participants.

Required Skills:

  • AST 1 or equivalent, and you have practiced companion rescue skills since taking the course
  • You must be comfortable skiing black runs in the resort in all conditions
  • This is not your first day skiing in the backcountry
  • You are able to actively participate in the decision making process during the trip

Required Gear:

  • Avi gear (beacon, shovel, probe)
  • Touring Skis, helmet
  • winter camping gear (sleeping bag and mats, tent, stove, ...)

Note: The trip will be dependent on weather and snow conditions and will be cancelled (or changed) if conditions are not in our favor.

Please feel free to send me an email if you have any questions about the trip/ you are unsure if you have the skills/ gear needed to join the trip.
