Description:

Pre-trip update: sorry all, I'm working on getting the zoom link out - email not working for some reason. Apologies for the delay.

I want to get outside and hike uphill this weekend, and after consulting the guidebook Squamish Hiking by Marc Bourdon from the clubroom, I’ve decided that going to Third and Second Peak of the Stawamus Chief Mountain (some people call it “the Chief”) is great for this. Specifically, the trail up to Third Peak is quite rugged with a short section of ropes and ladder rungs, and there are some interesting terrain features along the way, notably White Cliff, the steep walls of North Gully, and "a spectacular shelf of rock" a short descent off the summit's far side (Source: guidebook).

The plan right now is to leave Vancouver early, hike up Third Peak, traverse to Second Peak, and then head back down. But if more people (at least half) want to hike First Peak that’s also fine (indicate your preference when you sign up).

The guidebook gives the following for Third Peak (Second Peak is similar and actually shorter):

  • Round Trip: 5.8 km
  • Elevation Gain: 633m
  • Allow: 2.5 - 4 hrs
  • High Point: 702m

(Third Peak is the longest of the three; for comparison First Peak is 4.1km round trip and 541m elevation gain.)

There shouldn’t be any snow, though the current forecast (spotwx.com) says that there will be some rain so be prepared for wet conditions.

What to bring/wear:

  • Hiking boots or trail runners (or grippy running shoes, it’s all you have and you feel comfortable navigating steep/rocky/muddy terrain in them)
  • Rain gear
  • Water
  • Lunch + snacks
  • Non-cotton clothes (including warm ones, it'll still be cold out)
  • And other things from the VOC winter/summer day trip gear list (https://www.ubc-voc.com/wiki/Gear_Lists)

At the pre-trip we’ll figure out the details like specific pick-up times. I'll send a zoom link 5-10 minutes before the pre-trip meeting time.

Feel free to reach out if you have any questions or concerns!

See you at the pre-trip!
