Start: Saturday, May. 6th, 7:30 am

Description:

Do you ever ride your bike to school and find yourself thinking "Mhmm, this hill isn't steep enough?" Have you ever stood by the beach in Kits or Jericho and looked up to the mountains of the North Shore with envy? If yes, then the Triple Crown is for you.

To put it simply: we start from UBC early in the morning, hop on our bikes and head to the North Shore via Second Narrows bridge. Once there, we tackle our first target: Mt. Seymour - a gruelling 900-metre climb to the base of the ski resort. At this point, we are only just getting started - we fly back down Seymour and start heading towards Grouse. Grouse Mountain is not as cruel of a climb, as we only ride up to the base of the Skyride - a mere 200-metre climb (easy(not)). This is where the adventure starts to become real painful though, as we then head towards our third and last target - Cypress Mountain. The ride up to Cypress is a painful grind: not as steep as Seymour, but at this point you will already have a solid ~ 85 km of biking in our legs. After a painful 800-metre climb, we reach the base of Cypress Mountain Ski Area, and it hits you - you have completed the Triple Crown. Epic. Smooth ride back to campus and the hill on Off-Broadway feels like an easy piece of cake. Tempting?

To summarize: this is a nearly 130 km bike ride with about 2800 metres of elevation gain (including ~ 1000 metres for Mt. Seymour, 200 metres for Grouse Mountain, and 900 metres for Cypress Mountain). A total sufferfest. But hey, if you are crazy enough to join, I bet we can make it a good time.

My main goal in this is to have fun and to challenge ourselves a bit - I am definitely not aiming to beat speed records or anything. Most of the big climbs are out-and-back, so if you realize that you're not feeling one of them, then I'm sure we could find a way for you to sit out on it and re-meet later. Nevertheless, this will be a challenging adventure, and make sure you know what to expect.

Make sure to have: Working bike, helmet, lots of water and food, layers, charged cellphone, and loads of stoke. I'm thinking of meeting in front of the Nest at around 7:30 am but shoot me a message if somewhere else works better for you. This is very last minute so I'm just shooting my shot to see if anyone is interested in joining. Might also have to postpone if the weather for Saturday turns out to be too gnarly.

Joined to this is the classic itinerary that people take to do this - I'm thinking of doing a slight variation of it. Shoot me a message if you have any questions or anything! My cellphone is (514)-979-8300.
