Description:

Hello Tr(i/y)athletes!

Thanks everyone for signing up as athlete or as volunteer! As per VOC custom, everything will be sorted out at the last minute so here are some details:

Swimming:

The swimming part how I initially planned it is wayyyy too long, the course is now shortened to 1.1 km. The route is going around a little island is visible on the map:

 Considerations for the swimming part:

-          There is no professional life guard on site. We will have the VOC canoe/Kayak that can come to you in case you are in need but there is no guarantee that there is going to be a qualified rescue person that can help out in panic situations. More like a boyent object in case you have cramps of you are tired

-          E.coli levels in Buntzen are very low atm, hopefully it stays that way.

-          Water temperature is around 19 C at the moment and wearing a wetsuit is strongly recommended! Swimming without one is at your own risk.

-          Everyone should wear a brightly colored swimming cap for visibility (I have some spare ones if you don’t have one)

-          Not 100% sure if you can easily leave the water at the area that I planned it. Does anyone have some beta about that spot?? There is a little structure on the water front with log jammers.

Running:

Because the swimming course is different, the running part of the race is going to be a little bit longer than initially planned. If you start with the swim, the trail part is going to be 12 km. Starting steep with the Bearclaw trail to gain elevation to the Diez Vistas trail (approx. 460 m gain) and close the loop with the relatively flat Buntzen lake trail.

There is a possibility to skip the swim and do a full loop around the lake starting with the Energy trail, connecting to the Diez Vistas. This will end up being 14.5 km of running.

Considerations running:

-          This is a self propelled trail race. If there are enough volunteers, there could be one aid station at the far end of the lake but likely, there won’t be any stations along the way.

-          You have to look for the books along the trail and rip out the page with your race number to prove that you have done a full lap along the Diez Vistas. These books will also be your trail markers.

-          Someone will be at the swim – run transition with the stuff you need for the run (like your shoes) and to collect swimming stuff. These items will be brought back to Vancouver at the end of the day. Make sure to pack a bag with running items that will be collected by the volunteer before the swim.

-          Water and granola bars are going to be available at the swim-run transition. (leave or pack your cup/wrapper!)

-          Your bikes + helmets will be where you left them at the parking lot of the Buntzen lake beach. If you wear bike shoes or want other gadgets during the bike part, leave them with the bikes before you start the swim!

-          Volunteers will collect your running stuff you don’t need and bring them to Vancouver at the end of the day.

-          More water and snacks will be available at the run- bike transition.

Bike part:

Just bike back to Vancouver! It is up to you to plan the fastest/flattest way to Vancouver depending on what route you take is around 42-45 km. There is no way for me to flag the route so you will be on your own on this one. You can bring a cell phone in case you are in trouble/lost/flat tire. The finish line is going to be the VOC BBQ Beach at the bottom of Tolmie street. You can eat and chill while the other people are finishing!

Signing up:

You can sign up for the full triathlon or for one/two parts of the race – I don’t want to drown anyone on purpose – on this spreadsheet: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1rj-Lb8JsE-k5ZdNkOWyQr6-CciA-5W3kd2ySwD9BIys/edit?usp=sharing

If it turns out there is not enough interest for the full triathlon, this is going to be a day of trail running.  We can bring a BBQ to Buntzen beach to close off the day with food anyway. So sign up ASAP for logistical reasons!

Everyone that signs up for the race will be asked to chip in $15 for some snacks and for the fuel of the cars that will transport all the gear.

Logistics:

Start of the race will be at noon on Saturday 25th! This will allow enough time to transport all the bikes to Buntzen and makes sure everyone is hungry by the time you finish.

The plan is to load as many bikes in the cars that signed up as possible and ask the other people to take public transport to Buntzen lake. The nearest Skytrain station is… and we might coordinate some sort of pick up from there.

Volunteers:
I want this to be a happy/chill day for everyone. Come out and make it a relaxing day at the lake if you don’t want to do any part of the race. People that don’t want to do the whole triathlon but only the running part for example can still help out with some of the logistics, so let me know what lies within your reach for the day!

Volunteer duties:
Everyone: cheering and encouraging!

Swim-run transition:
Hike out there with water and snacks for the swimmers
Collect swimming gear in Ikea bags
Bring back the garbage and peoples belongings back to the main beach/car that will transport stuff

Run-Bike transition:
Keep an eye on the bikes and peoples belongings!
Collect running gear and drop them off in the transport car.

Rescue canoe/kayak:
Be out there on the water and keep an eye on everyone
Being able to rescue people in distress is a bonus!

Trail sweep:
Running the trail last and collect all the books that are going to be the trail markers.

H2O station far end of the beach:
Hike to the far end of the lake with a jug of water and cheer for everyone!

VOC BBQ:
Make sure the BBQs are ready for firing up around 4 pm on Saturday.
Cheer for the finishers!
