Description:

Have you been carrying a bunch of emergency gear in your pack, but have never used it and want to test it out? The goal of this trip will be to test our survival kits in a semi-real scenario to see how effective they are. We’ll do this in a controlled setting (a few minutes walk from an fsr), so that if something goes wrong we can quickly get to a car to warm up.

The Scenario:
You are on a day hike and you’ve gone off-trail to find a viewpoint, but can’t find your way back. It’s getting dark and you don’t think you can safely navigate back in the low light. You have to make camp for the night and figure your way out in the morning.

What we’ll be doing:
Trying to make a shelter: A good shelter should keep you dry and off the ground. An example shelter in fair weather might be some pine branches stacked on the ground for warmth, combined with a bivy bag. In poor weather, a small lean-to might keep rain or wind off of you.

Trying to start a fire: It might not always be possible to start a fire, but when it is, it can be the best way to stay warm through the night. A fire is also often the only way to make sure your drinking water is safe.

Participants can choose to do more than this depending on what aspect of survival they’re interested in. For example, it might be possible to do some basic foraging. It would also be cool if someone has an expired or about to expire can of bear spray they could bring to fire off.

Pre-reqs:

  • At least a few backcountry camping trips
  • Understanding that you will likely not sleep all night and be cold, wet and hungry. This will probably be type 2 or 3 fun.

What to pack:
You should pack your day pack as you might for an 8 hour intensive hike. If you want to be more realistic, you can pack less food to simulate what you’ll have at the end of the day. However, you must have some version of the 10 essentials.

Disclaimer:
I am not a trained guide or instructor. I will also be trying out a lot of this stuff for the first time, so this will very much be a group learning experience. Neither the club nor I are responsible for your safety. You will very much need to be responsible for your own safety (knowing when to call it quits if you get to cold, or asking for help if you get hurt). If you don’t feel comfortable with this, there are professionally instructed wilderness survival courses available.
