Description:

Dates: Friday, September 30 (a holiday) and Saturday, October 1

Of the three famous trails on the west coast of Vancouver Island, the Juan de Fuca trail is the most mellow and accessible, but it is nevertheless spectacular and storied. Now that I’ve moved to Victoria for my co-op, I’m determined to check it out. It’ll be more fun with VOCers. Join me!

This is a “mini” trip because we will only see a small portion of the Juan de Fuca trail. I do not want to hike the entire trail due to the lack of time, the complexity of car faff, and the desire for a relaxing (rather than epic) trip. I think it’d be fun to park somewhere, hike to a beach, camp on said beach, and retrace our steps the next day. For example, on Friday, we might park at the Sombrio Beach trailhead, hike the 8 km to Chin Beach, and camp on the beach there. On Saturday, retrace our steps to the car and come home.

This trip will run with a minimum and maximum of four people (including myself). It’s tentative because I don’t know if enough people will sign up. If you want to go, sign yourself up as committed, and I will email you by Wednesday, September 28 (hopefully sooner) to confirm whether this is happening.

If people want to, we might be able to visit downtown Victoria before or after, make the trip Sat-Sun instead, or add a second night for a longer trip. Details will be figured out once we know who is going based on what those people want to do.

Logistics

Participants will need to find a way to get themselves to and from the Tsawwassen ferry terminal. (There is bus service.) I will pick people up from the Swartz Bay terminal in Victoria, drive us to the hike, and drive people back to the ferry terminal at the end of the trip.

It takes about 6 hours to get from UBC to the trailhead (one way) including bussing to the ferry, taking the ferry, and driving to the trailhead. This means there will either be a very early start or a somewhat early start and we will arrive at the trailhead around 1 pm. Probably the second one. (It'll depend on what everyone wants to do.)

Cost

Participants should expect to pay $70 plus whatever you spend on food. (The $70 includes $40 for the ferry ticket, $20 for gas, and $10 for a backcountry pass.)

Prerequisites

To go on this trip, you should have done at least one backpacking trip before. You should also enjoy hiking through challenging, muddy, rainforest terrain and being outside in never-ending rain.
