In envisioning outdoor spaces where everyone feels safe, included, and heard, the VOC is aiming to address systemic barriers that exist in and outside of the club by providing AST-1 scholarships. While we recognize that these scholarships are not a solution to these barriers, we hope that they will be a step towards a more equitable and diverse outdoors.

The VOC has set aside $1000 to cover 5 AST-1 scholarships ($200 each) to lower the cost of AST (usually $250-350) for those who identify cost as a barrier to participating. This is the second year of the VOC AST-1 scholarship initiative. This years' scholarships were partially subsidized by the film night in November.

This application is meant to help the VOC evaluate outreach methods, gauge interest in the scholarship, pick scholarship winners, and assess the impact of the course on applicants. Applicant winners will by default remain anonymous. We are working to be actively anti-racist and inclusive, and some of the questions allow us to understand whether we are reaching marginalized groups.

Applications should take no more than 10 minutes to complete-- we have tried to make it short! That being said, please be thorough in your application questions to give the reviewers more information to pick scholarship winners. The scholarships are only for AST-1 and only for VOC members.

Timeline
Applications open Friday Nov 25
Applications close Thursday Dec 8 midnight. EDIT xtended to Thursday Dec 15 midnight.
Applicants selected for the scholarships will be contacted by Thursday Dec 15. EDIT contacted on Thursday Dec 22

Lastly, our intention is to be transparent and adaptable in providing this scholarship. Feedback and questions can be sent to the VOC IDEA (Inclusion Diversity Equity Action) Committee ([email protected]) or through the VOC's anonymous Open Feedback form https://forms.gle/oXWNwXn9U6nckc3c6 as well as contacting Melissa and Kei directly.
