Description:

Mountaineering season is coming! As someone who did G1 last September, I’m pretty keen on donning some crampons and starting to put the skills I’ve learned to use in the coming months. In the meantime, I’d like to work on my steep snow climbing and terrain evaluation technique by doing stuff involving more elevation and steeper grades. There’s a fair amount of people here who are also thinking the same thing, so let’s go climb something!

I’ll be running a day trip on the 25th up what will likely be one of the local mountains. Some of you likely know which ones I have in mind from me talking about it in the clubroom, but if you would like to know what I’m considering please contact me! The details will be emailed out to everyone prior to the pre-trip. Expect the total distance and elevation to be about ~1300m and 10 km, with some 40-45 degree snow-climbing involved.

As this trip involves steep snow and navigating avalanche terrain, I am limiting the group size to 8 and requiring everyone to have G1 + AST1 or equivalent. This will not be an instructional trip for these skills, and I will be picking people going by stoke and experience rather than strictly by the order of the committed list. You should have some experience with walking in crampons in steep terrain, as well as self-arresting and generally using an ice axe. Additionally, this trip will be highly avalanche and weather-dependent.

Depending on how the trip goes, I’m thinking of doing something like Mother of Ski Mountaineering where we get a group of stoked people and work on some objectives together throughout the spring and summer! If you’re keen on doing this but can’t make the trip or generally have any questions about it, please reach out to me! I’m really excited to make this happen 😊
