The Harrison hut is the VOC's most elusive hut, mainly due to the large quantity of landslide activity in the Meager Creek Valley which tends to destroy the roads. Mounts Meager, Capricorn and Devastator (all on the North side of this valley) make up what is reported to be the most geologically unstable region in Canada. This trip will be one of many, to restore access to the Meager Creek Valley - including the VOC's Harrison Hut and the Meager Creek Hotsprings - after the second largest landslide in Canadian History took out 2 bridges and kilometers of road along the traditional access route.
We will be constructing a 6km route which connects logging roads on the geologically more stable South side of Meager Creek and the Lillooet River, thus avoiding all major river crossings. After 4 reconnaissance trips and 1 flagging trip we have found the optimal route and in July we started some minor work. We will need a lot of labour to get this done - a great and rewarding opportunity to give something back to the outdoor community.
VOC legend Jeff Mottershead has moved a couple rocks so now the entire road should be drivable. We need to cut a few trees so I would like to go up Friday morning to cut trees and get the road drivable to the trailhead.
I expet most work will be done on the heli logged clearcut.
We will be car camping at the trail head we can bring spare socks, underwear and delicious food. Everyone should bring work gloves, and clothing that they are willing to get dirty and wet. Rainjackets and rainpants will be useful as probably the bush will be wet. The VOC will be payiong for peoples gas money to drive. Ideally we are looking for people with 4 wheel drive as the last section is steep and gravelly but we can shuttle people if needed.
