Description:

*Seeking coleads with whitewater experience! See the Message Board post.

Though sea kayaking and sailing are popular within the VOC, there are few trips happening for their adrenaline-filled counterparts, whitewater rafting and kayaking. Yet Vancouver is surrounded with fantastic whitewater, with gorgeous scenery to boot!

This trip will be an introduction to whitewater rafting, as well as an opportunity for leadership and to explore some of the most scenic rivers in Washington for those with more whitewater experience.

The nuts n bolts: We'll drive from Vancouver to Marblemount, WA on Friday evening (about 3 hours) and stay at a campground or ninja camp. The next morning we will pick up rental rafts and other equipment from an outfitter in Marblemount, and set off to run the Skagit River. The class II-III rapids on this stretch will be a fun warmup for the next day's objective, the challenging class III-IV run on the Sauk River (You can read about the whitewater rating system here). Throughout both days, there will be opportunities to learn skills such as river swimming, reading water, and steering rafts. Hopefully we'll be able to do more than 1 run per day, returning to Vancouver on Sunday evening.

Prerequisites: no whitewater experience is required but you must know how to swim. And if the idea of being thrown into cold, swift water terrifies you, this isn't the trip for you.

Gear: PFD rated Type III or V, sandals or old sneakers (shouldn't come off when swimming), a few carabiners, camping gear. We'll go over gear in more detail at the pre trip meeting.

Costs: Gas, $160/boat/day (about $54 per person for the whole trip), possible additional costs for a campground if we stay there and a drysuit if you rent one.

Trip roster will be based on the committed list, drivers, and experience.
