Description:
This summer lots of people showed up for VOC plant school and it was great to see so much stoke for alpine plants! Since the end of October is shoulder season (in therory) I thought it would be great to get together in the club room for another presentation. I met Ron Long through the BC Alpine Garden Club and he agreed to come present about his research and the native flora at Pink Mountian, located in North Eastern BC near Fort st John and Fort Nelson. For twelve years Ron Long has coordinated a Biodiversity study on Pink Mountain. The study involved specialist biologists from UBC, SFU, the Provincial Museum and the private sector and the results have been unexpectedly rich. In every area of study we have discovered rare species (44 to date) and a biodiversity that is unmatched anywhere else in the province. The basis of all this is the incredible number of plant species. The talk will discuss the alpine tundra environment, how the plants have adapted to thrive in one of the harshest environments on earth, rare species, the interactions that make it all work and the endless questions that await further study. You can find more information about Pink Mountain here: https://www.pinkmountain.ca/about/I am definitely hoping his talk can inspire a future trip.Update: we're moving this presentation to Zoom, same time, intivation below:https://uvic.zoom.us/j/84131553353Meeting ID: 841 3155 3353One tap mobile+17789072071,,84131553353# Canada+16475580588,,84131553353# CanadaDial by your location+1 778 907 2071 Canada+1 647 558 0588 Canada
