Let's go see the golden larches in Manning Park!
What are larches? Larches are a type of deciduous conifer trees. Each year, their needles turn a sunny gold colour before falling off, and this colour lasts only a week or two. Based on Facebook and Instagram photos, it seems like that week or two is about now. The larches closest to Vancouver are on the Frosty Mountain Trail in Manning Park, so that's where we're headed!
The trip: The plan is to leave UBC before noon on Saturday and get to the trailhead by 3pm. From there we'll hike 7km to Frosty Creek Campground, set up camp, and, if daylight allows, venture a kilometer or so further along the trail to get a first look of the golden larches. The next day, we'll get up early, summit Frosty Mountain at dawn, and enjoy the sunrise at the top. On our way down we'll stop and look at the larches for a while, before heading back down the mountain.
Weather: The forecast right now calls for some clouds on Saturday and clear skies on Sunday, with temperatures dropping to -2°C overnight. Yes, it'll be on the colder side, but we should have really nice panoramic views of the surrounding mountain ranges, and lots of sunshine to accentuate the larches' colours!
Prerequisites: This hike is not the most beginner-friendly, and this is also the first overnight trip I'm organizing, so I'm going to require that you have adequate fitness and experience doing overnight trips in the backcountry. In terms of gear: along with the usual essentials like proper footwear and rain gear, It's also important that you have shoulder-season or winter camping gear, especially a sleeping bag and sleeping pad rated for cold temperatures.
Max number of participants: my car can take 7 people including the driver, but if there's a ton of interest I might allow one more car of 5 to join.
At the pre-trip meeting: I'll decide who's going based on the committed list (provided you have the prerequisite experience). We'll also sort out logistics then (pick-up times, shared gear like tents and stoves, etc.).
Why is this trip the same weekend as Rock Party? I didn't move my cursor fast enough at 8am and 8pm the day tickets went on sale, so I didn't get one lol. But I genuinely do want to see the golden larches, a sunrise, and panoramic views, so it all works out!
If you have any questions, feel free to reach out. I look forward to seeing you at the pre-trip!
