Start: Saturday, Dec. 2nd, 7:30 am
End: Saturday, Dec. 2nd, 8:30 pm

Description:

If you don't own snowshoes, you can rent them the day before our daytrip by searching online well in advance.  Sports Junkies and MEC.ca are popular for snowshoe rentals, I gather.  And of course, our VOC Gear Shoppe loans snowshoes for a safety deposit (you get your deposit back, if all goes well); Sturdy boots are a must!

Pack a thermos of good substances like hot soup, hot oatmeal, or hot stew; plus high energy snacks like trail mix, fig newtons, granola, chocolate, cookies, etc. Bring a minimum of 500mL water to an absolute maximum of 1.5L (water is necessary, but also very heavy)

Bring "apres neige" (after snow) change of clothing to be warm and dry in after the day is done.  Don't forget dry socks and shoes to change into!

NO COTTON clothing because cotton becomes heavy, cold, and damp in our winters; dress in wool, synthetics, etc that stay warm even if wet; wear a wind/waterproof breathable shell over layers of warm clothing. Waterproof breathable pants, gaiters, warm socks and hiking boots are required for strapping on snowshoes and maximizing dry warmth.  Toque/Scarf/Headcovering and waterproof gloves are important, too.

We will meet at 7:30am at the SE corner of Howe & W Georgia Streets where we will catch the CypressCoachLines shuttlebus from VanArtGallery (White Enamel Iron Trellis & Benches at bus loading zone area) to Black Mountain Lodge at the upper parking lot at Cypress Ski Resort; cost is $35 for return trip

The trail pass usually obtained in Black Mountain Lodge requires that everyone is cognizant that each person is taking their own risk in pursuing this outdoor activity in the winter snow & cold.  NorthShore Rescue Team recommends letting someone know your ETA home and to call 911 if you do not arrive safely or if they don't hear from you within a few hours of your ETA home.

We will walk on packed snow to the trailhead, strap on our microspikes or snowshoes, and ascend to the peak of Black Mountain for a spectacular view!  We will take our slow molasses time, catching our breath whenever the need arises, snapping photos, chatting, snacking, on the way up, so I've budgeted at least 6 or 7 hours for the actual ascent...

Meet at 7:30am at the SouthWest corner of the intersection of West Georgia and Howe Streets (I've been told that the loading zone for passengers is situated near Vancouver Art Gallery: waiting area is under the white enamel iron trellis where there are public benches; costs $35 return trip

Again, please arrive no later than 7:30am for a quick group huddle and participant count as we board the shuttle bus at VanArtGallery

See you prepared and ready to go on Saturday Dec 02 at 7:30AM at VanArtGallery (white trellis and benches area on Howe at W Georgia)
