Description:
Smith Rock is a State Park in Oregon's high desert, and is about an 8 hour drive away, depending on how long Canada/US border crossing takes. It's home to amazing sport climbing (some great trad too) and some of the most wild rock features within an 8 hour drive in my opinion. It's also known for its... generous bolt spacing (stick clips pretty mandatory, can be rented in town).
I couldn't include any pictures in this posting because the photo gallery is down but do some googling if you don't know much about Smith! It's spectacular.
The plan:
Go to Smith Rock
Camp at a free nearby rec site
Have a great time
If it's too cold then this'll get cancelled, but I'm crossing my fingers for us. Last year in February we were climbing in tank tops when the sun was out, but night time will inevitably be chilly. A disclaimer that I've got my own car group organized already I believe, so I didn't put myself down as a driver.
I usually am pretty flexible with what Rock Level you have to have on my climbing trips, but for Smith Rock, due to bolt spacing and stiff grades etc., I would be a lot more comfortable for everyone to be comfortable with leading sport climbs, aka Rock 3 (description of VOC Rock Levels here).
Things you'll need:
- camping gear (tent, sleeping mat, sleeping bag, stove and cooking things)
- climbing gear (helmet, shoes, harness, quickdraws, belay device, anchor stuff, rope, stick clip)
- a passport
- stoke!
