Description:

I’ve been itching to get back into a boat for some kayak camping, and I’m hoping to share my love for kayak touring with some fellow VOCers! The Easter long weekend falls just as the weather begins to look brighter and right before the start of finals stress. The plan is to take the ferry from Tsawwassen to Galiano Island on Saturday morning, launch from Montague Harbor, do some island hopping for a few days, head back to Montague Harbor, and then take the ferry back to Tsawwassen on Monday evening.

We'll rent our kayaks from Gulf Island Kayaking. The rental includes a kayak, paddle, spray skirt, paddle jacket, and safety gear. This trip will include three days of paddling and two nights of backcountry camping. We’ll see some cool sandstone sea caves and hopefully spot some marine life too! If we get super lucky we may even spot the Easter bunny!!!

In springtime spirits, we’ll have a themed tea party! Wear your best florals and/or pastels and bring your favorite tea (as well as some extras to share with others)! In addition to our tea party we’ll have a community meal/potluck, but otherwise, make sure to pack enough food for yourself.

We will go over the following again at the pre-trip meeting, but to help you prepare:

Trip Requirements:

  • You should be be a confident swimmer
  • You should have some sea kayaking experience (at least once, I'd be most comfortable if everyone was comfortable kayaking with a skirt)
  • You should have enough endurance to paddle for at least 6 hours with short breaks

Costs per person:

  • Total: ~$210 (not accounting for personal food and wetsuit/gear rental)
  • Broken down: ~$50 for travel costs (ferry and shuttle (or gas)), ~$160 for kayak rental

Equipment/gear

  • A wetsuit/drysuit (the clubroom has limited wetsuit rentals)
  • Footwear that will stay warm when wet, this could be hiking boots and wool/neoprene socks or neoprene booties
  • Dry clothes for camp (no cotton - this includes jeans!!!) – (don’t be worried about needing to pack lightly, kayaks have ample amounts of room for lots of layers)
  • Dry shoes / socks for camp (no cotton - this includes jeans!!!)
  • A hat and gloves or mittens
  • A sun hat/glasses and sunscreen
  • Rain gear (weather permitting)
  • Camping gear (sleeping bag, sleeping pad, tent, strove, headlamp, etc.)
  • Drybags – these are super helpful for keeping all your gear dry

Feel free to reach out to me with any questions!
