Description:
From my previous trip posting:
‘Alongside Skiing, scrambling is easily my favorite mountain activity, one that I’ve picked up having arrived in BC from the 2nd flattest state in the entire US.
Climbing up mountains without the use of ropes, scrambling routes opt for easier lines than typical alpine climbing, giving it a lower barrier for entry. No rope knowledge, nor any graded climbing skills are required. Instead, someone scrambling relies on route finding, decision-making, and the ability to keep a cool head (it’s worth noting that having climbing experience of any kind, while not necessary, is helpful).
While the barrier for entry of scrambling is much lower than some other mountain sports, it certainly isn’t zero. I’ve found that the best way to learn is by slowly pushing my comfort zone alongside people I trust. My hope with this trip is to get a group of people together who are stoked to go scrambling and want to build their confidence & gain experience.’
I’m super happy to see how much interest there currently is in the first ‘So you want to go Scrambling???’ trip I’ve organized this summer. Unfortunately, there’s no way I’d be able to take the number of people on the interested list to Sky Pilot, where I’ve decided to go for that trip.
With this trip, the plan is to head up Cassiope and Saxifrage, just Northeast of Pemberton. According to some trip reports I’ve read, there is some 3rd class scrambling to be had, although it *may* not be required to get to the Summit of either. I’ve never been myself, but it sounds like a perfect place to practice scrambling in a relatively non-committing location. Plus, it seems like a relatively low-traffic area and there’s a great lake to camp next to.
There’s actually a VOC trip report from 2013 of some VOCers doing what we plan on doing (https://www.ubc-voc.com/2013/07/10/saxifrage-cassiope-scrambling-july-6-7) as well as some pretty good info (and phenomenal pictures) on the alltrails page (https://www.alltrails.com/trail/canada/british-columbia/saxifrage-peak-via-south-ridge)
Obligatory statement that I am not a guide or instructor, just a stoked scrambler who wants others to get into the sport.
