Description:
I would love to make it out to Mt. Rainier this summer! Dates are flexible, but I would prefer the weekend of the 19th or the following weekend.
The idea would be to leave Vancouver friday afternoon (4-6 hrs of driving), set up camp at either white river or carbon river camp grounds and spend Saturday hiking around these areas. Saturday evening we would camp again and leave either Sunday or Monday depending on people's availibilities. If we leave Sunday we could do a short trail in the morning or have a chill morning picking berries and packing up and then leave. Alternatively, if people are able and wanting to, we can do another full day hike Sunday and leave monday.
Both of these campsite options offer hikes with beautiful views of the glaciated peak, and alpine meadows (which will hopefully be full of wildflowers around this time). The white river campground is quite close to the summerland trail, which is 15 km, 600m in elevation gain and looks absolutely gorgeous. It is also near the Glacier Basin Trail which is similar in length and elevation gain.
Carbon River campground also has tons of surrounding trails of similar or easier difficulty. I found a good summary of them in the following link: https://www.earthtrekkers.com/best-hikes-in-mount-rainier-national-park/
This link goes over some hiking trails in 3 main areas of the park. The carbon river campground I mentioned is in the carbon river area, the white river camp ground is in the sunrise area, and there are some other available campsite options in the paradise area.
Though I have listed Carbon River and White River as possible campsites, we have more options -- these are just the ones I found the most appealing. Carbon river camp ground has some availability online, but is mostly walk-in. White River campground and the other campgrounds near paradise (namely Cougar Rock camp ground) are made available online the day before the camping reservation at 7:00 am. This trip would be tentative on securing reservations to the campgrounds.
Aside from a reservation, we need a parks pass to enter the park. The parks pass is $30 usd and camping is $20 usd per site per night. Mt. Rainier required us to book a timed entry if we are entering the park anywhere from 7am to 3pm, since we are driving up friday afternoon, it shouldn't be a concern.
The hiking on this trip would be moderate, nothing too crazy in elevation, but I would make sure you are comfortable camping and have generally good fitness.
If you are interested, please sign up! As I don't have a car, I will be prioritizing people with a car. Also, If you have any questions please feel free to reach out by email or text!
