Description:
A majestic scramble in Garibaldi Park.
Aiming to go with the Matt Gunn 2-day plan, though I will prioritize the timeline that gets everyone off the mountain safely. Matt Gunn describes the Castle Towers west face route as easy/moderate scrambling. However, this mountain is a force to be reckoned with, and it would be apt for most to regard this as 'challenging', and there may be sections that meet the criteria for Class 3 scrambling.
Day 1: Be ready to go around 5:00 AM, drivers pick up their people. We are looking to get on the Cheakamus FSR, which will bring us to our target entry point (i.e., Cheakamus River trailhead). From here we hike through the breathtaking Helm valley, passing the Helm Creek campsite on our route. We will bypass the Helm glacier via Gentian Ridge, and descend into Gentian Pass to bivouac for the night near a lake.
Day 2: Wake up at around 4:30 AM and depart no later than 5:30 AM. Onward to Polemonium Ridge and up to the West Summit. We will evaluate the notch and consider whether we want to aim for the true summit given how everyone is feeling. I would be more than happy with getting to the West Summit. Expect a full day getting out.
If there are no drivers I'm likely to going anyway, so would likely take an EVO up to Garibaldi and would be able to take at least three additional people.
