Description:

Join myself and fellow VOCer Kathleen as we venture towards the northern regions of Pinecone Burke Provincial Park, marching up logging roads, hopping onto boulderfields, and walking along ridgelines towards Seed and Pinecone Peaks (Mt Gillespie too, time and terrain permitting).

NOTE: Due to the terrain, remoteness, and difficulty of this trip, previous experience is mandatory. We are also expecting Class 2 and 3 scrambling with possibly a little exposure. If you have a fear of heights, you should sit this one out.

Brief Itinerary:

  • Aug 28th - Day 1: Depart Vancouver and drive along the Mamquam FSR. We'll see how far my 2WD sedan can go up the E100 spur. Then we'll hike up ~7-11km (depending on where we parked), gaining +1,000m of elevation until we get to a little mountain lake to camp for the night.
  • Aug 29th - Day 2: Ascend the Seed Peak ridge towards the summit and continue on towards Pinecone Peak. Stats are ~7km round trip, ~560m gain. Time, mood, and terrain permitting, we'll see if we wanna tackle Mt Gillespie as well. We'll return to camp for the second night.
  • Aug 30th - Day 3: Takedown camp and say goodbye to Pinecone Burke. We'll head on back home hopefully in time for supper.

What You Need To Bring & What You Need To Know:

  • This is a proper backcountry trip. This means:
  • NO outhouses. We'll have to dig holes for solid waste.
  • Grizzly bears. We must keep our cooking, food + scented items, washroom business, and where we sleep far apart. This is not the trip where you cook your food right outside your tent.
  • Helmets recommended when we get to scrambling. Borrow from the VOC or grab a bike/skateboard helmet in a pinch.
  • Pack as you would for any 3 day trip.
  • No fires.
  • No amplified music.
  • No smoking.
  • Practice Leave No Trace:
  • Stay on trails as best you can.
  • Pack out all garbage you came in on. Including compostibles/organics.
  • Bear canisters/bear bags recommended, but not necessary. We'll store food well away from camp. If bears get to our food, we'll be forced to bail anyways.
  • Hiking pace is expected to be moderate, with time for breaks and photos.
