Description:

Date changed to September 8.

The goal of this trip is to swim in as many lakes as possible during a pleasant day hike in Vancouver. Last year when I ran this trip we swam in eight lakes. This year I want to aim for fifteen.

About Black Mountain

Black Mountain hosts the closest ski lift to UBC (as the thunderbird flies). It also has a scattering of tiny lakes near the top. Some of these lakes are beautifully clear but most are brown and muddy with a layer of "chocolate cake" on the bottom. They're still fun to swim in.

The Plan

We will aim to be at the Cypress Ski Resort parking lot by 8:30 am. Then we'll hike up the Baden Powell Trail to Cabin Lake near the top of Black Mountain. After a quick swim, we'll bushwhack our way to the many other lakes nearby. We can descend by the way we came, or, if we have extra time, we could take the South Knob bushwhack route. Expect to be out and about for 7-10 hours, so bring food for sustenance.

To be clear, this trip will involve some bushwacking, an immensely fun activity that involves pushing your way through slippery and pointy bushes where there is no trail. The trip will probably not be too difficult in elevation gain or technical skills.

No prior experience is required except that you should know how to swim.

What to Bring

  • Headlamp or flashlight (other than your phone)
  • Sturdy shoes
  • Non-cotton hiking socks
  • A light sweater/fleece in case you get cold
  • Lunch
  • Afternoon snack
  • Water (at least 1 L, probably more—though I'll bring a water filter)
  • Sunscreen
  • Sun hat
  • Swimsuit
  • Microfibre towel (optional)
  • Comfortable backpack to put it all in

How to Join

If you want to join, sign up as Committed. The evening before the trip, I will send an email with more details and make a WhatsApp group chat of people on the Committed list. I can fit five people in my car. If we get more drivers, we can take more people.

If you are on the Committed list but can't come anymore, that's fine! But please make sure to click "Bail" on the signup page so we aren't wondering where you are.
