Description:
(Mostly shamelessly stolen from Sonia's previous trip descriptions) Smith Rock is a State Park in Oregon's high desert, and is about an 8-12 hour drive away, depending on how long Canada/US border crossing and Seattle grocery shopping takes. It's home to amazing sport climbing (some greatish trad too) and some of the most wild rock features (pockets, pockets and more pockets) within reasonable driving distance. Smith Rock is somewhat notorious for having excitingly high first bolts so I would recommend bringing a stick clip if you have one. However, there is no garantee that your stick clip is long enough to reach many of the bolts. The trip is currently scheduled to start the friday before reading break and end on the tuesday but I will leave precise dates and departure times up to drivers and people can sort out when works for them at the pre-trip.
Plan is as follows:
1) Voyage to Smith Rock
2) Camp at a nearby free rec site (skull hollow) or pay to camp at the campground in the park. Plus side of the campground is the presence of water and the fact that the outhouse is less than a 20 minute walk away (I think).
3) Climb
If it's too cold/wet then this'll get cancelled, but hopefully it works out. Either way it may be cold during the day and will be cold at night, so a warm sleeping bag is ideal. Due to the length of drive, stiff grades, bolt spacing etc... It would be great if everyone is at least comfortable with the skills associated with VOC rock level 3 (leading/lead belaying). If this is not you but you have somebody willing to coach you along then that is fine but this is not an instructional trip and idealy people are pretty self sufficient. Detailed descrition of VOC rock levels here.
Things you'll need:
- Camping gear (tent, sleeping mat, sleeping bag, stove and cooking things)
- Climbing gear (helmet, shoes, harness, quickdraws, belay device, anchor stuff, rope, stick clip)
- A passport
- Stoke!
