Description:

Hi folks,

let’s go see the golden larches at frosty mountain!

“What are larch trees? They are one of the only coniferous, deciduous trees. This means the needles on this tree change colour seasonally and fall off. At the end of September to early October, the 2000+ year-old larch trees on Mount Frosty turn to gold and are truly a sight to behold!”

Mount Frosty is located in E.C. Manning Park, about 2.5 hours from campus. I’ve booked 3 tent pads at frosty creek campground, 7.5 km from the trailhead, for Oct. 19th - 20th. Keep in mind this will be near the end of the golden larches season. Depending on the weather, there is a chance that they will shed before we get there :( but I think the hike will be fun regardless.

The hike is 22km round trip and 1150m elevation to Summit Mount Frosty. If you want to see the larches and don’t want to summit, the hike is around 18km.

The gear you need will depend on the weather. Snow is possible in October, so ensure your sleeping gear is warm enough to handle shoulder season weather. If it does snow, microspikes or even snow shoes(can rent from voc) will be needed to summit. The tent pads have a maximum capacity of 4 people in 1 tent. So anyone with 4 person tents will be greatly appreciated and have sign-up priority.
