Start: Friday, Sep. 27th
End: Sunday, Sep. 29th
Pre-trip meeting: Tuesday, Sep. 24th, 7:00 pm
Pre-trip meeting location: Right beside the club room

Description:

Never been to a hut? You're in. Been to a hut? Ok sick, you're also in. The mission? Simple. Have a blast at Brew hut and bag some nearby peaks (i.e Cypress peak, Keg peak, Mount Brew, any others? idk). The working idea is to head up Friday night (or Saturday morning), crash at the hut, then load up the peak bag Saturday and come back as champions on Sunday (Your parents and friends will be proud) (Also its a flexible plan. If people prefer a Saturday start we could return Monday).

Technically my second year in VOC but I was a sleeper agent last year and did nothing so it will be my first time meeting a lot of you (aside from Rock Party) so I encourage anyone new to the club to join in and make some dope as heck friends (your parents will be even more proud, your friends may be jealous). Also, this will be my first time running a VOC trip. I've led my friends up this trip before, but hitting Cypress will be new for me (anybody done it? hmu).

Just gauging interest currently, if it takes off I can help any newcomers with a packing list (no tents needed). I can also drive 4 people.

FYI The hike up to the hut is ~11k and 1200m elevation. Hiking experience would be nice and backpacking experience would be ideal but not critical (don't let this stop you!!!). We can chat about it in the pre-trip meeting or you can message me (email or text - click on my profile)

Spend a chill weekend in the peaks, you know you want to!

TRIP UPDATE (Sept 19th 2024)

Hiya!

Some fresh updates hot off the press! As promised I have put together a packing list for those new to backpacking. Give 'er a skim and let me know if you have any questions. BTW I'm considering the idea of a Saturday night potluck, thoughts (everyone brings an item or two)?

!!! IMPORTANT NOTE !!!

The hut has a recommended capacity of ~12 individuals. Accordingly, this trip will be capped at 12-15 VOC'ers to prevent a brew hut mosh pit. We will have 3-4 drivers, including myself, that will drive people up (Thank you to everyone that contacted me about this - MVPs!!). Due to the nightime low single digit temperatures up at Brew, I will only bring enough people to fill the hut as this is aimed to be an introductory trip. IF you have backpacking experience and are fully committed to sleeping outside let me know but it WILL be cold (we may be able to make a tent group with an additional driver).

Partcipation will be based on the committed list order. Individuals that possess most of the required gear on the packing list will be prioritized to ensure safety and overall wellbeing.

I'm sorry to those that won't be able to join. Huge unexpected interest. Please consider the Lizzie hut hike or the work hike!!

Brew Hut Packing List

Highlighted Items are available for rent from the VOC Gear Room

Trip Details:

Duration: 3 Days / 2 Nights (Friday to Sunday)

Expected Weather: Mix of cloud; Day: ~17’C; Night: ~7’C

Terrain: forest service road, single-track dirt trail, loose rocks, steep slippery sections, potential boulder scrambling

Cell Service: Potential, likely none

Vibes: Immaculate

General Gear:

  •  40-65L Backpack
  • Comfortable Hiking footwear (something with a strong/grippy sole)
  • !!! HEADLAMP !!! (I have one extra. We will likely get to the hut past sunset)
  • Bear spray (Not mandatory but we should aim to have 3-5 amongst the whole group)
  • Water filter (Not mandatory but we should aim to have 3-5 amongst the whole group, I’ll have one or two)
  • Water bottle / backpack reservoir (Minimum 1L)

Optional: Phone charging block, hut sandals, backpack rain cover

Sleeping

  • Sleeping Bag (Ideally a warm one)
  • Sleeping Pad – A lighter weight one to pack small for backpacking
  • Inflatable Pillow (Or a rock, if you’re built different)

Optional: Tent (A few people should bring one in case the hut is busy. I likely will)

Clothing

  • Socks x3-4 (At least 1-2 WARM pairs)
  • Shorts x1
  • Hiking pants x1
  • Base layer Pants x1
  • Athletic T-shirt x2-3
  • Long sleeve x1

Notes

  • Athletic / hiking pants or shorts and shirt for the grind UP (Temperature = mid to low teens)
  • WARM clothing for hanging around the hut both nights (Down puffer jacket = perfect). Temperature will be single digits. We will likely start a fire in the hut stove to keep warm. Aim to bring warm but packable items.
  • Hiking clothes for Saturday peak grabbing day (Sunny; Temperature = mid teens)
  • Clothes for hiking down on Sunday (Sunny; Temperature = mid teens)

Recommended: Always bring one more pair of socks…always. Try to reuse pants, long sleeves, etc to save on backpack weight / space. Wool and synthetic fabrics preferred for warmth and moisture whicking. AVOID cotton!

  • Backpacking camp stove + fuel (i.e MSR Pocket Rocket, Jetboil, etc…)*
  • Mug for coffee / tea

Optional: Cutlery, bowl, etc… Entirely dependant on your meal plans

*I will be bringing a Jetboil with quite a bit of fuel to heat up water if people need any, but it won’t be enough for everyone (Not mandatory but we should aim to have 3-4 amongst the whole group).
